Hard shell capsules are a common oral dosage form. Traditionally, the capsule shell has been formed from gelatin, but today capsules from non-animal origin are available.

Capsules offer a rapidly disintegrating barrier that will reduce dusting and bad taste as well as ensuring appropriate bioavailability. In addition, several different drug substances can easily be combined in capsules, making them suitable for coated modified release pellets.
